Having a Scribble

Writer's picture: emilyafosteremilyafoster

Hello hello, with everything that has been going on recently I have been feeling a little overwhelmed. In my efforts to keep busy I have rediscovered some joy in just drawing and not thinking, as well as the joys that come from using brightly coloured felt pens. Thought I'd share a couple of the scribbles that have helped calm my brain and some of the things I have learnt from doing them. I also just like the colours, they make my eyes happy so hopefully your eyes will get a kick out of it too.

Wowiee!! Scribble one, as you might assume the first one to flow from my brain. I really enjoyed just putting down the different areas of colour and blocking in shapes. In this one on particular I was also really pleased by the ways the different colours layer on top of one and other. It was so much fun to just draw what I wanted without having to think or worry about what the final outcome would be like. I also enjoyed having a play with some of the different marks and shapes I could make using felt pens.

Scribble two, I guess I started to think about shapes bit more. I spent most of my time just drawing wonky rectangles over the top of one and other and the colouring in the different parts where they handover lapped. I think in a way I found it therapeutic because I used to do the same with my dad on Microsoft paint so I was just bathing in nostalgia but it was glorious. Also a little reminder that things you learn when you are small are still super fun and valid to experiment with now, this is something I am enjoying to think about a lot at the moment. But yes, I had lots of fun with this one colouring in little shape sections and using lines, it was a good time.

Number three, I used some different colours here go me!! I really enjoy working with primary colours but struggle to create finished images using them, so to have a little experiment was very nice. I was colouring in overlapping sections of shapes again but this time the shapes more more adventurous, I used zig zags and everything. I also really enjoyed the patterns I used in this one, I have been enjoying a little bit of a cross hatch recently.

These are just silly scribbles and in some ways I don't know why I am sharing them but guess I just wanted to say one of the best things drawing can do it help you and your brain. I found it so helpful to sit and have a scribble and not worry about what appeared in the page. It was also fun to just have a play with some new materials.

So yes, please have a scribble and just see what happens, have some fun :)
