Learning Something New: Surface Pattern Design :)

Writer's picture: emilyafosteremilyafoster

Hello hello! As I have had so many time on my hands recently due to everything that has been going on I am trying to learn new skills and get more involved in the creative community. Most recently this resulted in me joining Elizabeth Olwen's livestream teaching the basics on hand drawn pattern design. I had a lovely evening of doodling and learning and wanted to share :)

After having an initial scribble I decided to do a little fruity pattern. It was really interesting to learn about the way to construct patterns so that they can be repeated. By following Elizabeth's process I ended up with a little hand drawn bloc just like this wow.

Once the livestream had ended I decided to take my little bloc into illustrator and have a play. This was slightly more stressful than I anticipated but eventually I ended up with a colourful digitalised version of my fruity bloc. This little bloc then hopped over to Photoshop and I managed to create this slightly skew whiff pattern. Even though its not the most accurate for a first attempt at making a pattern I was pretty proud of my little experiment.

Still in the pattern making mood the next day I decided to try and use the method I had learnt through the live stream digitally. I created the initial pattern design in illustrator using just simple shapes and then moved it over to Photoshop again to try and construct it. I kept with my fruit theme but this time I tried to limit my colour palette so the pattern was mainly focused on shapes. Again, not the best thing I have ever made but I am quite pleased with the outcome.

To conclude, I am grateful to Elizabeth Olwen for doing her livestream because not only did I learn a new skill but I got a new wave of inspiration and a lovely evening of making and positivity. I am going to try and keep making these little patterns and hopefully I can have even more fun and maybe even get a little bit better. I would defiantly recommend to everyone to try and join in the activities and online events being run by the creative community if you've got a lot of spare time at the moment. Have fun and make as much as you can. Hope you can get some joy from my fruity patterns :)
